OSU = Ohhh Shit U'Guys

Clarett claims cash, cars among benefits at OSU

"Ending six months of silence, former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett has told ESPN The Magazine in this week's edition that he "took the fall" for the school during a 2003 NCAA investigation and that he's talking now because he wants to "clear his name" with National Football League owners and general managers.

Clarett says that while he was at Ohio State in 2002 and 2003 head coach Jim Tressel, as well as certain members of his staff and boosters, provided him with improper benefits. He says he covered up Tressel's improprieties during the NCAA investigation and afterward, Ohio State "blackballed'' him from the football program." Click here for the full article.

Here are the key questions as far as I see it: Does this really come as a shock to anyone? Does Clarett have any credibility though, and should anyone believe him at this point? What happens to squeaky clean Jim Tressel's rep after this allegation (she said you're only 18, you don't have a rep yet)? Should Peter King call this OSU team the greatest college team in two decades? Will there be a riot with bonfires and flipped cars in C-Bus after this? Will John Kerry actually carry the state of Ohio now, in light of this new information (...man, I've got certain information, all right? Certain things have come to light)?

Only time will tell. But this is just what we needed, another sports scandal...

even though tressel's parents just won't understand, this really can't be a shocker (no not in that way). college football is far and away the shadiest of ncaa sports (with hoops running a distant second) and this player compensation is rampant. i'd bet this happens at over 100 D-1 schools and it completely violates the integrity of college sports.

sending a recruit to a party or players taking said recruit to a strip club is one thing (assuming the events are not coach-sponspored) but paying players? completely and totally unacceptable. if this is found to be true, tressel and his entire coaching staff should be given a lifetime ban from coaching in the ncaa. players who accept payments should also be given a ban (maybe not lifetime) and forced to give up their scholarship. this is the only way to send a clear message and clean up this nation-wide problem.

Ethan, agreed on just about every front (including your instant recognition of the DJ Jazzy Jeff shenannigans)...

If I know it's rampant (Russian translation), and you know it's rampant (Russian translation), everybody must know that paying student-athletes like this is rampant (Russian translation, place goes wild, Communism falls, show Rocky's kid). So the NCAA is left with two options -- either pay players in a legit manner so we can level the playing field and everybody can do it, or start investigating and banning ADs and coaches and boosters immediately. Lifetime bans, no switching schools either...that's the only way to dig out the roots of this thing.

For the record, I'm not one for paying student athletes, but I have written a few things on helping them out more on spending money and stuff...I truly believe we should be doing more to help out student-athletes, that life sucks. But for the most part, I do agree, let's just try to clean up collegiate athletics, maybe get Eliot Spitzer on the case and see what flies...

before i click on the full article, i just want it noted that i'm hoping it starts out with a series of quotes from clarrett:

"do you see what happens? do you see what happens, tressell? do you see what happens? do you see what happens tressell, when you fuck a stranger in the ass..."

Ahhhh, I pressed the right button...quote Lebowski and Ahren's ears perk up. Well, the Ace abides.

Actually, now I'm picturing Clarett smashing Tressel's windows and it's cracking me up to no end. Hope Mo stopped at the In 'n Out Burger afterwards.
