Complain About This, Assfaces

Goddamn, I fuckin' hate these people:

"In an appearance before Congress in February, when the controversy over Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl moment was at its height, Federal Communications Commission chairman Michael Powell laid some startling statistics on U.S. senators.

The number of indecency complaints had soared dramatically to more than 240,000 in the previous year, Powell said. The figure was up from roughly 14,000 in 2002, and from fewer than 350 in each of the two previous years. There was, Powell said, 'a dramatic rise in public concern and outrage about what is being broadcast into their homes.'

What Powell did not reveal—apparently because he was unaware—was the source of the complaints. According to a new FCC estimate obtained by Mediaweek, nearly all indecency complaints in 2003—99.8 percent—were filed by the Parents Television Council, an activist group." Click here for the article.

The PTC can eat my balls. Indecent enough for ya? These people need to be silenced immediately. I first clashed with the PTC when they began their assault on professional wrestling, and I actually respected their belief that kids were watching some questionable programming. I didn't agree with them for very obvious reasons, but I respected their right to be bookburning nazi cows. But that was confined to the wrestling world...now these fuckers have gone mainstream.

It's these Billy Ripkens that are leading the networks to self-censor themselves, leading to week-long uproars like the one concerning T.O. and MNF, who will eventually lead the FCC to crack down on what we can and can't watch. Fuckers, you know those two knobs on the radio, or those buttons on the television remote? One changes the channel, another turns it off. Use 'em, and stop fucking everyone else's shit up. I'm gonna leave it at that. Now don't make me come up there.

If you folks wanna read a fucking amazing article on these d-bags in the PTC and other like-minded fascists, check out Frank Rich's "The Great Indecency Hoax" from the 11/28 NY Times. At this point I don't think it's free on their website anymore, but maybe some of you have a Lexis Nexis password or maybe a Times password...just an incredibly crafted piece on this censorship agenda.

I'm only borrowing your Hum-vee.

Interesting article and well written. I do question some of the logic, however.

Rich writes... ''Desperate Housewives'' is hardly a blue-state phenomenon. A hit everywhere, it is even a bigger hit in Oklahoma City than it is in Los Angeles, bigger in Kansas City than it is in New York. All those public moralists who wail about all the kids watching Ms. Sheridan on ''Monday Night Football'' would probably have apoplexy if they actually watched what Ms. Sheridan was up to in her own series -- and then looked closely at its Nielsen numbers."

I agree that it is too simplistic to think the country is broken down into red states and blue states. But oddly, Rich inadvertently argues both dies of that here. Kansas City and Oklahoma City, as anyone who has ever been can tell you, are more cosmopolitan places than the other rural locales in the same states. I find it strange the Rich uses this as his example.

I don't understand why liberals are working so hard to dismiss the idea that a lot of votes in this past election were cast by individuals buying into this administration's bill of moral goods.

To paraphrase Thomas Frank's, "What's the Matter with Kansas"... Vote to end abortion, get tax breaks for the rich.

Why are we so reluctant to acknowledge that it isn't just family values coalition types swinging this country to the right? And why is there so little discussion about what can be done to change it?

Gypsy, great point about KC and OK City, but I'm not gonna rise to the bait on your other point. I'm done with "moral values" politics for a little while, I'm still on vacation from the electoral fallout.

Ethan, well, then, you complete me.

I know. Everyone is over me on that subject.

It amazes me that people can get away with pretending to be offended by things. When people are honestly, legitimately offended, they turn it off. There is no reason to complain about what you se on TV, because you control that. You also control what your children see on TV, you can turn it off, limit access or teach them when they should turn it off. The only reason to complain about these things is because YOU want to control what EVERYONE ELSE watches, which is a joke.
