Wolf in Strom's Clothing

Did I mention on here the September 1st episode of The Situation Room when Wolf Blitzer let one slip in the aftermath of Katrina?

He said: "As much as you see that picture, though, you simply get chills every time you see these poor individuals. As Jack Cafferty just pointed out, so tragically, so many of these people, almost all of them that we see, are so poor and they are so black, and this is going to raise lots of questions for people who are watching this story unfold."

Now we've got some video...here we go.

Bad tipper, that Wolf Blitzer.

I used to work at the U-Wisconsin Business School catering company when I was in college, which did big events when they had hoity-toity folks in town. He made a mess of his French Onion soup, probably because of the beard, and he barely touched his steak, which hurt, as I was the one who cooked it.

Then, after his speech, he didn't even tip the bartender (me) for his several glasses of wine. Fortunately, if you get a glass or two of Bourbon into Tommy Thompson he drops twenties like he's in a strip club, so that made up for it a bit.

Still, we watched Fox News that night at my house. Which was good, because then we knew never to do that again.

Hey, Paul, do you know what this is? (I'm rubbing my thumb and forefinger together.) It's the world's smallest violin playing just for you.

Seriously, in fairness to Blitzer, I think there are some situations like that where you're not sure if you're supposed to tip. Everyone knows that you tip a cab driver or a waiter, and if there's a cab driver or waiter who has been stiffed by Blitzer, please post here to let us know. But from how you're describing the event, it sounds like he was the guest of honor, and I could understand why maybe he'd assume that the hosts were taking care of the tip for the bartender. Don't get me wrong, I think a guy who makes a Blitzer-sized salary should be pretty free-flowing with the cash, but this doesn't sound like a situation where everyone would know you're supposted to tip.

I love how this post turned into a discussion of the man's tipping habits. I hate bad tippers, and I always leave more than I should, but I'm with MDS on this one. You think as the guest of honor he was definitely under the impression he should go into the pocket? I just don't know about that...

And also, he is Jewish.

Wolf Blitzer doesn't care about waitstaff.

Not inteded to garner pity. Intended solely to call Wolf Blitzer a bad tipper. Put all tiny violins back in their cases.

First of all, it was a cash bar, and when you have to reach into your wallet to actually pay for the drinks, and they cost 3-4 bucks each, so you're always getting singles back, and you pocket the singles, I think that's weird.

Second, he was with other people that were tipping, and I'm sure he saw at least two Professors with whom he was conversing tip, and, even after seeing that, continued not to tip for the rest of the evening.

Third, at one point he bought a round for like 5 people.

Now maybe he figured it wasn't a tipping event, and he was the guest of honor, (even I was surprised that the U didn't spring for an open bar) and then after seeing people drop a few bucks on me he felt embarrassed about the first time and just wanted to appear consistent of something. But it was still weird for this one guy to be the one non-tipper.

Third, he was an anomaly. Most guest speakers were outstanding tippers.

And fourth, as I was and am a poli-sci dork, I really liked Wolf Blitzer. (And I still do. I really don't care that much.) Have you ever seen the South Park where Cartman convinces Radiohead to tell some kid that he sucks?

Not quite the same thing, but still.

Second third should be fourth, fourth should be fifth.

Hey Ace- Long time reader, first time (in a long time) comment (er)...

Getting back to the defaming black people topic, did anyone catch the soundbite of Rush Limbaugh talking about the hurricane? He clearly said "blah blah blah and Mayor N*gger, um I mean Nagin."

Dig up the audio...

OK, obviously, those are some extenuating circumstances. I was envisioning an open bar where there's a glass there in case you want to throw a buck in, but not everyone does. If Blitzer was digging into his own pocket and putting a buck back in after every round, I can understand how you felt. At the same time, it does seem that a guest of honor should get comped.

Maybe Blitzer's feeling is that if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, he'll give them a little something extra, but he thinks this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as he was concerned, you were just doing your job. My guess is that if you had taken him in the back and sucked his dick, he would have gone over twelve percent.

(Note: I've always found it odd that Nice Guy Eddie said, "I'd go over twelve percent for that." Isn't going over twelve percent the norm? Pretty much everyone I know tips a minimum of fifteen percent, so I'm a little surprised that Nice Guy Eddie sees going over twelve as something outlandish.

Wolf Blitzer is going to get his tools back from his neighbor.

Here's the Rush audio, AGU:

It's short, but it's there. The strange thing is, it sounds involuntary, which kinda makes it worse!

Wolf Blitzer hates big black cocks with pearly white cum. (I just blushed even typing that).

He's a nice guy, that Eddie.

Anyway, he probably helped out my GPA slightly by reducing my drinking funds for the evening. So I've got that. Which is nice.

Rush really dropped an N-Bomb there?

I dislike Rush Limbaugh as much as anyone, but it sounded to me like, "Mayor Nagi--Ray Nagin." Like he started to just use his last name and then decided to use his first and last. Didn't sound like "nigger" at all to me.

At 2:01 PM, Blogger PaulNoonan said...

Oh, he sure did.

At 2:03 PM, Blogger Ace Cowboy said...

Nay-ger is what he said. Like I said, didn't sound like it was on purpose, but still, that could be worse.

he's an idiot, let's just move on.

I listened to the Limbaugh audio and he says "nager." Which is how some really country folk pronounce the offensive word that TAGU referred to. Still, even in the absence of words around the slip that could have been inadvertently transposed, I can give him the benefit of the doubt on that one being a slip.

As for Nice Guy Eddie, I was always told as a kid that the norm was 10%, 15% if they act right. Personally, I'm a huge tipper just because I have the added burden of being a black person and therefore stereotyped by many as a bad tipper.

Maybe there is a relationship between those last two sentences...

Still, if you don't fuck up my order or spill any food on me you'll get 20%.

At 2:04 PM, Blogger PaulNoonan said...

I think the "was going to say Ray, then decided to go with Nagin, and combined the two" makes sense. Moving on now...

Hey Rashid,

I thought I was the this blog's only black reader.

Strangely, I didn't know about the stereotype that black people don't tip, until I saw a piece on it on thephatphree.com. I always tip at least 20%, but that's usually because I'm hitting on the waitress

You black guys, always hitting on the waitress.
