False, Blatantly False.

Sometimes it's fun to be a trivia geek. It certainly helps when you want to pick apart the boneheadedly moronic statements that come from television's many horrendous announcers.

In the later innings of last night's Braves/Astros game, FOX's Steve Lyons made a seemingly innocuous comment about the Sox-vee-Sawx series. I'm sure most people heard it and took his word as ironic fact, but not me -- I sensed the error and immediately grabbed the nearest sports almanac, standing in shock that Lyons would distribute such false information to the baseball masses.

After plugging tonight's Boston/Chicago Game Three, Lyons said, "Ironically, the last time the Red Sox won the World Series, the White Sox won the next two."

I was busy setting up my new bookshelves, so roommate Dorsey Levin called me in and TiVoed back, marveling at the cool historical tidbit. What?! That's just totally untrue, fellas! False!

And just about anyone could have caught his mistake because it involves two of baseball's biggest stories: Boston's title drought and the Black Sox scandal. The Sawx last title was 1918, and the Black Sox scandal in which they tanked the Series was 1919. So right off the bat, you know the ChiSox couldn't have won the first Series the year after Boston did.

Then I thought, well maybe he meant the the Pale Hose made it to the Series the two years after Boston captured the title...but one look at the almanac and you see that the White Sox didn't even make it to the Series in 1920. So what the fuck is this guy talking about? Anyone catch this?

I think Lyons, whose only real claim to fame as a ballplayer is pulling down his pants after sliding into first 15 years ago, is actually a decent color man, especially when paired with lovable second-generation broadcaster Thom Brennaman. But how nobody caught his error and corrected it on air is truly beyond me.

C'mon, Steve, you're better than that.

Slack Song of the Day: Next week is the Keller Williams show at New York's new Nokia Theatre, so in order to get excited about it, I have to start listening to him again. Here's his most well-known song, Freaker By the Speaker from moe.down (9/2/05). And here's a pretty cool version of him doing the Dead's Brown Eyed Women, only in true K-Dub form.

FYI, they shut down that site with the free tunes -- so if someone's got something better, let me know.

wouldn't he be wrong for another reason? the last time the red sox won the world series was last year and not one, let alone two, world serieses have been played since then.

semantics, i know, but i'm an anti-semante.

Nah, it actually was pretty clear that he meant the 1918 Series. Still, douchebaggery.

"Not to mention the Blacks and the Jews..."
