Yeah...Um...Okay

Oh New York Post, how right I wish you could be...but how incredibly wrong you are. I hope for A-Rod's sake he doesn't win the regular season MVP at this point.

The only worse prediction than this front-page headline was my call that Matsui would come through with a big hit. By big hit, of course, I meant 0-5 with EIGHT men left on base. Hai.

But, in truth, it's been a strangely compelling season, a 1999 New York Jets (8-8 with Ray Lucas) kind of year, a February-October long and unthinkable journey that toyed with my every emotion. Sure there's disappointment this morning, but there's also brimming hope for next year, there's tremendous pride in a job well done, there's love for the departing, super-duper love for the Captain's efforts and unbridled enthusiasm for the returning.

We will return to glory. Don't sleep on the 2006 Yankees.

Here's my message to America: You say you've grown sick and tired of the Yanks and the Sawx every year? Well, you got your wish, so have fun with the White Sox/Angels ALCS. You better watch every game and enjoy it thoroughly. You've made your bed, now fuck in it.

Thanks for the 3 rbi's in the series A-Rod, Sheff & Matsui.

Awesome.

This is going to be a long day.

Well, at least these chumps continue to make Jeter look that much better by comparison.

O Captain, My Captain.

I don't want to see the Angles/White Sox, that blows. I never understand people who get sick of things that are so much fun to watch. What was better than watching that ALCS last year? Well, it certainly won't be this ALCS.

Speaking for the fans of generally sucky teams everywhere, the Yanks and Sawks are just the Cubs and Cardinals with more sycophantic announcing. I'm not glad that they're not playing, but I really don't care.

New York may have 8 million people (thereabouts) but camera shots of Yankee Stadium show the same number of people as camera shots of anywhere else (Except Atlanta. Losers.)

I'll watch every game the same way I watched every game last year: as long as football's not on. (Until the Brewers make it next year, of course.)

Wow, that was a grumpy comment. I need some coffee apparently. Incidentally, you guys were screwed on that running outside the baselines call, which should have been obvious as Erstad was intentionally extending himself across the bag to try and draw contact.

They were screwed almost as badly as the Chargers, who had Darren Sproles get facemasked on the final play of the game, which, if called, would have given them one more play in field goal range.

Of course, the worst NFL ref, Jeff Triplette, was responsible. As Boomer Esiason said last night, "These refs missed a heck of a game tonight."

hey ace, how many tantrums did you throw last nite? i think i had 8.

this blows.

also, i think the series actually helped arod's case for mvp - he didn't hit, they didn't win. jeter, giambi, and jorgie put up good numbers, so it's not like no one hit.

"Speaking for the fans of generally sucky teams everywhere, the Yanks and Sawks are just the Cubs and Cardinals with more sycophantic announcing."

I'll pretend that comment didn't happen. I openly acknowledge an East Coast bias in the media and in my own personality, but anyone who makes this claim -- and I hear it a lot -- loses a little crediblity.

JH, I agree with you obviously. Why would people ever get sick and tired of classic drama? You're telling me the 2003 and 2004 ALCS weren't two of the greatest non-WS playoff series of all time? Well, I've seen and read a bunch of "I've had it with Boston vs NY" articles, so I hope those people are happy.

I personally think the White Sox and Angels make for good baseball -- part of me thinks this will deliver the goods. The other part of me thinks it's bland as fuck and I might be bored to tears. Let's hope it's the former.

Ethan, I guess I agree somewhat -- but it wasn't just A-Rod...Sheff and Matsui were not very good in this series. Sheff had some hits last night, but overall, these guys just didn't get 'r done. I'd argue if Matsui got even one hit last night we win that game. So, yes and no.

That was a brutal game to watch...Mayor Joe West had to have been paid off. His strike zone was abysmal, the Cano call was OUTRAGEOUS...go back to Spokane.

They really picked on Robbie Cano this series -- first the Hood Play, then the Base Path thing. Too bad, he's a good kid.

Either way, we lost. No use crying about shit now. Just wanted to squeeze that in there in defense of Mr. Cano.

Credibility Check:

Alright, might I suggest taking a look at the White Sox/Red Sox game in which Manny and Papi went back to back, and Manny hit another one later, and, in which Konerko also homered. If you can, listen to the home run calls by the national media guys (Berman in particular was truly terrible), and after doing that, tell me once again that my claim isn't true.

When national announcers announce Yankees and Red Sox games, the story is the Yankees and the REd Sox, and everything that the other team does is framed as a reflection.

Berman on Konerko's HR - "Ramirez and Otiz aren't the only ones to hit 40 HRs this year."

That was the HR call. No "Back, Back, BACK BACCKK GOOONNNEEE." Like Manny got.

Joe Buck on Vlad - "If the Angels have an Alex Rodriguez, it's Vlad Guererro."

What's the story on Contreres? Ex-Yankee.

The Red Sox are Powerful! The White Sox are scrappy underdogs. Even though the WS hit more HRs than the Red Sox this year (Yes, they scored a ton fewer runs with those HRs).

I don't really care that they're sycophantic either. I was merely stating a fact. The point was that they're nothing special to me, and why should they be?

i don't think it can possibly be said that the media hype of yanks-sox isn't warranted. they have been battling every single season for 10 years now. 10 years! sure the cubs-cards is a good rivalry, but how many meaningful series have they played in the last 10 years?

it's not like there was a lot of national sox-yanks hype in the late 80's-early 90's...

ace, true that sheff and matsui didn't do much, but it's not often that all 6 of your best hitters have great 5 game stretches. jeter, giambi, and posada produced, while the other 3 didn't. cano, crosby, and williams put up marginal numbers (as expected). seems like enough to win to me, given that the angel's only threat was invisible for all 5 games.

At 11:17 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Defend Bobby Canoe all you want, and he is a good young player with a bright future, but the dude has more brain farts than Rainman. I am still not over the fact that him nor Posada slid in Game 4, and that no one seems to have said anything about it. Canoe is a good player who just doesn't think out there...the opposite of Jeter if you ask me.

At 11:22 AM, Blogger jp said...

I have to say, as much as I hate the Yankums, it took one hell of a play from Erstad to end it last night.

Jeter looks that much better because he is that much better. See, the thing that George needs to figure out is that you guys were so much better when you had chemistry and a bunch of role players that had clearly defined roles with a history of coming through in the post-season. I mean, Leyritz, O'Neill, Pettitte, Brosius, etc.

You can't buy chemistry. You also can't buy heart.

anonymous - i couldn't agree more. i've been saying that about cano for a while. the no slide had me cringing with memories of jeremy giambi. my biggest problem with cano is that people act like because he's a rookie it's ok to make mental mistakes. party people - it's not like this is his first year of baseball ever, just his first in the bigs. last time i checked the rules are the same in the minors, college, high school, etc. does everyone think his coaches the past few years were just ignoring this shit? he indeed does have a bright future, but no one should be expecting these mental miscues to stop (much like you can't expect a guy who never walks to all of a sudden get the patience/eye of giambi).

JP, thanks for not being a dick...see, Red Sawx fans can participate in intelligent discourse every once in a while!

Robinson Cano = Bernie Williams. Bernie is Robbie, Robbie is Bernie. They make the same fucking stupid types of mistakes in the field (for their respective positions), and neither can pick up a pitcher's move and steal bases or run around the basepaths for that matter.

And Noonan, I'd respons, but Ethan said exactly what I'd say. Kudos bar, E-Train.

As much as the East Coast/Sox-Yanks bias there may be, it's not there just because someone thought it would be a great idea to do it. The media is all about ratings, as we all know, and they go with what gets them the best ratings. If a Padres-Dodgers rivalry were huge or if those teams didn't suck for the last 10 years or so, then we would be saying there is a West Coast/Pads-Dodgers bias in the media. But, that stuff doesn't exist in the West or in the Midwest, or at least it isn't nearly as exciting or as prevalent as it is between the Sox and the Yanks. It isn't our fault, as Sox/Yanks fans, that people in other regions don't care as much about this as we do. Or rather, there aren't as many people out there who care about it like we do. The media bias exists because they play to the demand of the masses, and the masses demand Sox-Yanks.

I can't wait to see the Fox executives jump off a building en masse when it's a White Sox/Astros World Series. Talk about low ratings. Let's have a 7 game series of 1 run games. 1 run games can be good baseball, but it does nothing for the ratings or entertainment values, nor does it do anything for the average fan. Only baseball purists and diehard fans will appreciate one run games.

That's my opinion. I hope you Yankees fans enjoy Johnny Damon next year. I'm tired of listening to him.

At 12:07 PM, Blogger PaulNoonan said...

At no time did I mean to imply that I care in any way about the Cubs/Cards rivalry either.

I'm not talking about hype. I liked watching the ALCS last year as much as anyone, but that's because both teams were great. I don't think the rivalry aspect really holds that much appeal for those not involved in the rivalry. When the Chiefs play the Raiders I don't tune in especially to see it.

When the Packers play the Bears I do, but that is because my team is playing in its rivalry.

I said exactly two things in my comment:

1. That fans of the Brewers (or Giants, or Pirates, or Royals, or Blue Jays, etc.) shouldn't, and probably don't, give two shits if the Yanks and Sawks don't play so well in a given year. Why would they? If the Pack isn't in the playoffs I don't suddenly root for a Cowboys/Redskins NFC Championship. That would be stupid.

2. That national announcers get orgasmic when either the Sawks or Yanks do anything good, while showing comparably less enthusiasm for similar accomplishments by other teams' players. This is obvious to everyone.

That is it. No talk about hype, undeserved attention, etc. Neither of those points should be controversial in any way.

At 12:16 PM, Blogger Matty Mac said...

Chris Berman should only be allowed to announce the home run derby anyway. I can't stand watching a game that he's announcing. Between he and McCarver, I think they make me hate baseball sometimes. If there weren't an 8 second delay, I would watch all of the games with the radio on.

At 1:31 PM, Blogger Ace Cowboy said...

But Noonan, I think you're still missing the point -- the Chiefs and the Raiders aren't the two best teams in the league, like the Yanks and Sawx have pretty much been for the last six to eight years (and don't pick that apart by saying they didn't win the WS every year, so they're not the best, because you get my point).

The Chiefs and the Raiders don't nearly provide the drama that the Yanks and the Sawx do. Nobody does. The only storyline of the last two decades that comes close to this rivalry is Mac and Sosa. Why would you rather watch anything but the best?

Basically, I'm saying -- If the Pack missed the playoffs, you shouldn't root for Boys/Skins. but if the Boys and Skins were the two best teams in football (or thereabouts) that provide intense drama every time out -- in a seven game series no less -- why WOULDN'T you want to see that? Wouldn't that be better than some game like Carolina versus Tampa?

And I think you're overreacting on the announcers thing...people from the non-Northeast always, ALWAYS blame the NE teams for things they have no control over.

First let me say that my feelings on Sheff are well-documented and I would like gloat for a second about how his lack of defensive awareness and plethora of hubris combined to create a 20 inch dildo to ram up NYs ass. He has a decent arm, but how can you talk about brain farts leave out him not deferring to the CF on that play. It is not an isolated incident. This is also the 4th postseason in a row that he has checked out of when needed.

For all of the talk about how great NY and BOS were last year and the year before (and they were), neither is as good this year. I see no reason to think that the Angels and the Sox will be any worse of a series, unless you think that endless hype over past encounters would make the Yanks / Sox more watchable. Personally, I look forward (in a prostate biopsy sort of way) to hearing Tim McCarver call an ALCS game using his entire oral cavity - seeing that the spot reserved for Jeter's dick will be empty. Don't get me wrong, I think that Jeter is the man. But damn.

At 1:39 PM, Blogger PaulNoonan said...

I didn't mean to blame the teams. I just hate the announcers. If I hated the teams for that, I'd have to hate the Packers too. But just because it's not their fault doesn't mean it's independent of them. Even I get sick of Madden's hitting on Favre, but it comes with the territory.

I do want to see the best teams play in the playoffs. All the more reason I don't mind that the Yanks amd Sox are sitting this one out.

At 1:49 PM, Blogger ethan said...

rashid, i disagree on sheff's fielding. i actually think he is an underrated rightfielder. he has had to cover a lot of territory this season with bernie no legs "roaming"/standing in cf, and is used to having to go get balls in the gap if he can. also, he probably couldn't hear crosby since the crowd got really loud on that play. it was an equally tough play for both, but sheff got there first (it hit his glove, not bubba's). also, that's not really a play where someone calls it til right at the end because both players are waiting to hear if the other is camped or not (which neither were) - that's why collisions always happen on balls in the gap where both players are running full out (see: cameron, beltran).

At 1:57 PM, Blogger Ace Cowboy said...

Re: Sheff -- as Donnie Fiedler pointed out last night as we were watching, had Bernie been in the game, Sheff catches that ball because Bernie would be nowhere near it. And Sheff would have it all to himself, and he'd probably grab it. Interesting...

And yeah, neither NE team is as good as it's been, but at the same time, whatever they've lost is more than made up for by the drama they create. I am all for the White Sox and the Angels, they're good teams, blah blah blah, but it's gonna be a bland series.

Bland like my grandmother's pinochle game.

At 2:14 PM, Blogger MDS said...

For the most part, I agree with Noonan.

My big thing is this: I like baseball, but I like football much, much more. So when I turn on ESPN I'd much rather find them showing football highlights than baseball highlights. And I think an Angels-White Sox ALCS makes me much more likely to see football highlights when I turn on ESPN than a Yankees-Red Sox ALCS does. So I'm happy with the results of the ALDS.

At 2:18 PM, Blogger ethan said...

i don't really follow - there's only football highlights 2 days a week.

I had the pleasure of enjoying my Yanks latest debacle first hand last night amidst a sea of bleached-blonde, red tank-top wearing, thunderstick-waving, un-edumacated baseball suburbanite assholes in the good old OC last night.

Meaningul baseball games should simply not be played in front of such crowds.

One of shockingly few yanks fans at the ballpark last night, I was amazed at the abuse I received, and most-likely deserved, as I exited the stadium in the most painful walk I've taken since Iowa City Fall 2000.

Fuck the Angels. Fuck the White Sox. Nobody cares. Schilling's still a fat fuck.

And this whole Cards/Cubs discussion shouldn't even be dignified with a response Ace. The entire Midwest could evaporate (except for Tyrell Sutton) and nobody would care.

At 3:12 PM, Blogger MDS said...

Ethan, there are football highlights a lot more than two days a week.

Sox1918, I've been to about half of the Major League Baseball stadiums, including the Angels' stadium about 20 times, and while I'm not sure why you care what color the hair of your fellow fans is, I can assure you that there are just as many un-edumacated suburbanite assholes everywhere.

At 3:50 PM, Anonymous Rashid Muhammad said...

I watched Sheff for years in the NL and saw him up close in Atlanta. When he came to Atlanta people called him "underrated." I saw trappings of that play last night during his entire tenure here, and with Andruw in center it's not like he had to cover a ton of ground. His arm might be underrated but his brain isn't.

I am fully aware that it is not a play uniquely screwed up by Sheff, but he's still overrated and I am just jumping over the opportunity to say it.

And come on now, drama? The kind of drama I want to see is good games, not infinite rehashes of the past or what hair gel pretty boy X will use when he hits the showers tonight. Though I do suppose that the mutual backslide of the teams could create a fairly interesting series.

At 3:58 PM, Blogger Ace Cowboy said...

"And come on now, drama? The kind of drama I want to see is good games..."

These aren't mutually exclusive, right? The 2003 and 2004 ALCS weren't too of the best non-WS series of all time because of what's at stake and the history? That's what I'm talkin about.

At 5:11 PM, Anonymous SpanishMiguel said...

Ace, when you call Angels vs. White Sox bland, you're missing one important thing -

The White Sox are bland. They're not exactly a one year wonder, but they're far from a dynasty and will be hard-pressed to repeat next year what they've pulled off in '05.

The Angels, however, are really exciting, have fans that go nuts (that thunder sticks shit was pretty nuts a few years ago) have interesting players (Vlad, Figgins, K-rod), beat the Yanks 3 years ago en route to winning the WS, and just beat the Yanks again. It's definitely EastCoastBias to short-change the Angels in failing to recognize that they're one of the most interesting and deserving AL teams.

Also, it's EastCoastBias to think that we're all short-changed on a Sox/Yanks ALCS in a year when neither was really great.

ALSO, what made both the Sox and Yanks interesting last year and this year is that they're pitching sucks and offenses were great. Don't blame Jon Judy Garland for being good.

That said, I think we were all robbed of a Mets world series run by the stoopidest-manager-in-the-league-who -will-continue-to-get-his-dick-sucked- because-of-his-affiliation-with-the-oft-fellated Yank'ums: Willie Randolph.

At 5:12 PM, Anonymous HANDSTAND said...

Actually, not only do I think Bernie would have gotten to that ball in center, he definitely would have called Shef off, which never crossed Crosby's mind.

Bernie's arm made be about as strong as my opposite throwing arm, but he can (could - cue single tear) still run down balls pretty well.

At 5:21 PM, Anonymous Rashid Muhammad said...

One thing that the White Sox do have is a run of postseason futiity that rivals Boston's before last year with the exception that they have pretty much done nothing and haven't mercilessly teased their fans with close call after close call.

I'm sure that a lot of fans on the periphery that were intrigued by Boston last year will have something else to interest them this year.

Spanish, since I disagree with about eight things in your comment, I'll just instead say, "Um, you're wrong."

Well, you're right about Willie, I think. Everything else, pure garbage.

And for the record -- I'm not saying the world got cheated without the Sawx and Yanks, I'm just saying this is what so many people have been clamoring for, so now they got their wish and they better watch. That's it.

Because I'm awesome, here's the article you're lookin' for:

The New York Post
February 15, 2004 Sunday

HEADLINE: PREPPY' PAYS A VISIT - KILLER NESTING IN POSH CO-OP

BYLINE: JENNIFER FERMINO

Look who's back in town.

"Preppy Killer" Robert Chambers is staying in a Sutton Place co-op, a year after being released from an upstate prison for the 1986 murder of Jennifer Levin in Central Park after a night of drinking.

"An anniversary is something you celebrate," Chambers told The Post on the one-year anniversary of his release from prison. "I don't celebrate getting out of jail. You have to be a real a-hole to get yourself in jail."

"I came out of jail, and I'm trying to do my best. I'm not that important - the Levin family is."

"I'm responsible for something very serious. Two families got hurt. I'm not important, I never have been. Somebody died, and that is extremely important."

He said he feels "terrible" for the Levin family.

"They're going to read about me and say, ‘What was the point of 15 years?' and I can't answer that."

Chambers pleaded guilty in 1988 to first-degree manslaughter for the strangulation of Jennifer Levin. They met at Dorian's Red Hand on the Upper East Side - the next day, her badly bruised body was found in Central Park.

Chambers tried to deny any involvement in her death, even though people spotted the pair leaving together. He eventually claimed he accidentally strangled her when she hurt his genitals during rough sex.

Chambers, who was spotted by a Post reporter entering and leaving the residence numerous times during the week, denied living there and said he was visiting a friend, but declined to say what friend.

"I have friends who live in that building," said the Manhattan native. "I'm in and out of New York. I visit my family. I stay with friends."

The 18-story building on East 57th Street is the home of one-time Chambers girlfriend Shawn Kovell, according to a neighbor.

Kovell starred with Chambers in an infamous video shot at a party before his trial. In it Chambers popped the head off a doll, saying, "Oops, I think I killed her," as Kovell and three other lingerie-clad women watched and giggled. The inflammatory tape came to light shortly after he was sentenced to five to 15 years in state prison.

Kovell could not be reached for comment.

Chambers developed a drug problem in prison and spent three years in solitary confinement. He told The Post yesterday that he is clean now and goes to AA meetings.

"I don't drink," Chambers said. "I drink coffee and I smoke cigarettes - and that's the next thing that's going to go."

"I got things to do. I don't have time to get high. I owe $25 million [to the Levin family for a wrongful-death suit]. I don't have the money to get high."

But he's not making payments to the Levins because, he claims, he's not working.

He also said many of the reports of his drug use were exaggerated.

"I've never done heroin," he said. However, he was busted in prison for possession of the drug.

"A lot of people say a lot of things about me that aren't true."

Chambers, who carries a cell phone and said he has e-mail, doesn't think the world changed too much in the 15 years when he was in jail.

"It seems the same, wars are still being fought," he said.

Chambers, who got scores of letters from smitten women during his trial and while in prison, was carrying a bouquet of purple tulips. But he claimed he had no Valentine to celebrate with.

"Times have changed," he said with a shrug. "I'm a boring person. I always have been, I always will be."

Despite being one of the most high-profile murderers of the '80s, Chambers said people rarely recognize him.

"I don't think people really care," he said.

Most of the residents of the tony co-op seem unfazed by the convicted murdered living in their midst.

Even the doorman likes Chambers.

"He's nice, he's a cool guy," he said.
