Under Pressure

Hmm, I don't know how I missed this, but Monk today pointed to a story in the news cycle about how Tom Petty may file a suit against the Red Hot Chili Peppers for some good ol' Vanilla Ice plagiarism.

Apparently the new RHCP tune Dani California and Petty's Last Dance of Mary Jane have too many similarities. "The chord progression, the melody, the tempo, the key, the lyrical theme…they're identical," DJ Dan Gaffney said on his show.

Someone's been kind enough to play both songs on the same track, and sure enough, the whole thing sounds pretty fishy. Take the taste test here and judge for yourself.

Interestingly enough, the guy who put that mp3 together is now receiving death threats for doing so. Check this out: "ey motherf--ker we're gonna rape ur whole family and let u watch just before we slith ur throath u f--king piece of s--t, u shouldn't take s--t about the peppers u don't know s--t about music, so many songs look the same but u screwed it now, we know how to find u, ur a dead man."

Dude, who likes the RHCP that much that they'd rape a man's family and make him watch over a bit of chord muckraking? More importantly, when this threat-maker says "before we slith ur throath," do you think he spelled it "slith" because he has a lisp? That'll teach this asshole to "take shit about the peppers."

Man, I love this miserable world sometimes.

Slack Google Search of the Day: "magic mushrooms, don't look in the mirror" -- That begets this post, one of my early favorites.

Slack Video of the Day: Check out this YouTube clip of Liverpool striker and giant beanpole Peter Crouch doing the robot. Awesome!

Slack Song of the Day: A two-fer from The Band...first, a full show from Wollman Rink in Central Park from 6/30/71. Next up, one of my favorite tracks from The Last Waltz, here's an awesome version of Mystery Train with Paul Butterfield. Great tune.

It's similar to the Flaming Lips vs. Cat Stephens/Yusef Islam fiasco. Who would have thought that the peppers would have more crazy blood-thirsty fans than the guy that issued a fatwa on Salmon Rushdie.

Actually it was the other way around with that one, wasn't it?

I don't remember that controversy very well, but it's hard to imagine Wayne Coyne biting a little Cat Stevens style. I don't quite put Yusef's catalogue in the same genre as the Lips. But, hey, I just looked it up and sure enough, weee've got controooversy.

Flight Test is actually a pretty obvious copy of Father and Son. The tempo is picked up a little but I can't even think about the words to the former without subconsciously shifting into the latter.

What? Salman Rushdie issued a fatwa against Cat Stevens?

I think Danny's thinkin' of Salbass from the sauna with Kramer...actually, Cat Stevens supported the fatwa call against Salman, that much is true.

Danny, you go to that Milw TLG show the other night or is that a different Danny Noonan on the forum?

I meant that my comparison of the crazy Chilli Pepper fans (fans of the copier) to Yusef Islam/Cat Stephens' fans (fans of the copied) was a bit off.

"Danny, you go to that Milw TLG show the other night or is that a different Danny Noonan on the forum?"

Nope. I've never seen TLG and didn't even know they were here. Must be a different Danny Noonan. How odd that there would be two of us from Milwaukee posting in forums that you read though. The other one probably isn't really a Danny Noonan.

I'm pretty sure that kd lang fans issued a similar threat when the Stones stole "Constant Craving."

Yes, very strange...a fake Danny Noonan running around Milwaukee on one page and a real Danny Noonan running around Milwaukee (is that where you are?) on another.

Strange doings in Wisconsin.

I love when this stuff comes out in music news. These fights REEK of a PR campaign. And this one is no different. The article may as well read: "I am pissed about this whole thing," said Petty. "And by the way, my big Summer tour with opening acts Stevie "Gold Dust Women" Nicks, Trey "Two Versions Of Me" Anastasio, and Pearl "Yield" Jam starts this Friday night in Miami at the Dade County Coliseum. Sponsored by Budweiser - the King of Beers and brought to you by Z100X, Miami's only all-rock, all-the-time rock station!"

Hip hop has been pulling this crap for neigh on a decade now.
